ABOUT US

Biographical Information: Matt Marion earned his B.A. from Columbia College (Columbia University) in New York, and his Juris Doctor degree from American University Law School in Washington, D.C.  While in law school, he was President of the Moot Court Board and a Dean’s Research Fellow, and received the prestigious International Academy of Trial Lawyers Advocacy Award as a graduating third year student.

Matt became an associate and then partner of Healy & Baillie LLP in New York, where he practiced law for almost two decades.  At Healy & Baillie, he received extensive experience in federal and state lawsuits, regulatory matters, and arbitrations, and handled insurance, environmental and contract disputes, as well as import-export, transportation, and international trade proceedings.  This breadth of experience has allowed him to represent clients in a wide range of civil, regulatory, and corporate matters, and to continue that representation at Marion Law LLC, serving both individuals and the business community in the United States and abroad.

Scope of Work: On the transactional side, Matt Marion regularly advises companies and individuals about corporate formation, asset protection, and governance issues, and drafts both standard (i.e., operating and shareholder) and one-off corporate agreements, as well as asset sale and purchase contracts, employment and consulting agreements, software licenses, commercial leases, franchise and sports club agreements, affreightment contracts, charter parties, and the many ancillary documents required by business clients.

As a litigator, Matt represents both companies and individuals in federal and state court trial proceedings involving a wide range of contract and tort claims, as well as shipping and transportation matters, import-export investigations, marina-related claims, recreational yacht and vessel casualties, insurance coverage and policy compliance proceedings (acting, variously, for both underwriters and policy holders), employment matters, and environmental claims and defenses, among others.

Mr. Marion’s regulatory and administrative law work includes both compliance advice and representation in formal, contested proceedings at state and federal agencies, including the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and Department of Insurance, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Department of Commerce, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.  Many of these representations are fulfilled through timely regulatory compliance advice; however, Mr. Marion also has extensive experience in the formal proceedings that sometimes are required.

Fee Structure: Typically, Matt represents clients on an hourly basis pursuant to a written fee agreement.  However, in suitable cases, he may agree to an alternate fee arrangement.

Bar Admissions: Matt is admitted in federal and state courts in four jurisdictions: Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia.
